The analysis was based on the theme content analysis technique, having as theoretical reference the conception of curricula. Results: three categories emerged from the analysis: public health training experiences, influence of the experiences at the Unified Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde - SUS) on the speech-language-hearing therapist’s training, and potentials and limitations in public health training. Conclusion: the public university students of Northeastern Brazil perceive public health training as a means to prepare them for their future inclusion and professional practice at SUS. Objetivo: analisar a compreensão dos discentes sobre a formação em saúde coletiva dos cursos de fonoaudiologia das universidades públicas do Nordeste brasileiro. Métodos: estudo qualitativo, estudo de caso múltiplo, o qual se utilizou da realização de entrevistas com informantes-chave discentes de sete universidades do Nordeste para a produção dos dados. Para a análise, foi utilizada a técnica da Análise Temática de Conteúdo, tendo como referencial teórico a concepção de atos de currículo. Resultados: três categorias emergiram a partir da análise: experiências formativas na saúde coletiva, influência das vivências no SUS para a formação do fonoaudiólogo e potencialidades e limites na formação em saúde coletiva.
