Resumo:From the implementation of undergraduate courses in Brazil and its expansion over the years, the need arises for the existence of an evaluation instrument that allows the analysis of institutions, courses and student performance, in order to identify weaknesses and promote strategies to improve the quality of teaching. Currently, the Higher Education Assessment process is under the responsibility of the National Higher Education Assessment System (SINAES, in portuguese), which has the National Student Performance Examination (ENADE, in portuguese) as an instrument to assess the performance of undergraduate students. This student performance exam produces inputs to qualify courses at universities, as well as being used along with other instruments as a parameter for resource distribution. The data obtained in this evaluation are exposed and analyzed in the area summary reports, which include a variety of statistical information of national and regional scope. However, no reports are available that present a detailed study for the Brazilian states. Therefore, this work aims to discuss the performance of Mathematics Degree courses in Rio Grande do Norte (RN), addressing the profile of students, perceptions and technical analysis of the test. In addition, an attempt was made to carry out a historical analysis of ENADE, for the area of Mathematics, starting from the first edition (2005) to the most current one (2021). Due to its methodological nature, this research is classified as documental, exploratory with qualitative and quantitative character. It is important to emphasize that the results presented for the 2021 edition were obtained from the microdata provided by the National Institute of Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (Inep, in portuguese), with the support of the R Studio software. With this study it was possible to perceive positive points, advances and characteristics that need to be improved in ENADE. Furthermore, knowledge of the context of evaluation of Mathematics courses in the RN, together with the results obtained at the national and regional levels, allow working on the weaknesses of the State more effectively.
