The more specialized disciplines of medical courses suffer from this paradigm of how to fit in this universal context, so the evaluation by competences emerges as an alternative in the search to select the most essential skills to teach in the medical school. The aim of this study was to systematize the evaluation of students of the ophthalmology discipline of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) through a skills assessment, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), based on a clear and target evaluation of the skills. This is a prospective intervention study carried out from January to December 2016, in the ophthalmology discipline of UFRN, involving Professors, monitors, ophthalmology medical residents and students of the eighth period (out of twelve periods) of the institution’s medical course. The project implemented a competences assessment as a teaching-learning tool in the discipline, offering a new normative theoretical-practical curriculum, which is under the current reality of medical education, adapting the practical moments of the discipline to the generalist vision of medicine. A educação médica vem passando por um processo gradativo de reformulação do seu modelo pedagógico centrado no aluno, na qualificação do processo ensino-aprendizado e na utilização de novas metodologias avaliativas que sejam mais condizentes com as habilidades necessárias para a formação de um médico mais humanista e generalista. As disciplinas mais especializadas dos cursos médicos sofrem com esse paradigma de como se inserirem nesse contexto universal, assim a avaliação por competências surge como um alternativa na busca de selecionar as melhores habilidades a serem trabalhadas para a formação dessas competências clínicas. O objetivo deste estudo foi sistematizar a avaliação dos alunos da disciplina de oftalmologia do curso de medicina da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) através de uma avaliação de habilidades, Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), partindo de uma definição clara e objetiva das habilidades a serem enfatizadas nessa etapa da formação médica continuada. Trata-se de um estudo prospectivo de intervenção realizado de janeiro a dezembro de 2016, na disciplina de oftalmologia da UFRN, envolvendo professores, monitores, residentes de oftalmologia e alunos do oitavo período do curso médico da instituição.
