Resumo: | Popular Medicine in a Changing World. v. 24, n. 1, p. 75-89, jan./jun. 1996. Studies popular medicine in Brazil and the world. Summarizes the origins of medicine in the West, mainly in Europe. Report the contributions of Juan Sorapán de Rieiros (XVII century), Francisco Antônio de Sampaio (XVIII century), and Fernando São Paulo (1936). Emphasizes that popular medicine in the Northeast of Brazil should be categorized in two kinds: the material and the spiritual one. Analyses the popular music therapy through many examples. Concludes that popular medicine, although remains as a “generous mission”, is on the verge of beeing surpassed by scientific medicine |
