description The present work aims to analyze the presence of Friedrich Schiller in the Brazilian nineteenth-century press, contributing to new insights in the Comparative Literature, History of the Press, and German Studies areas in Brazil. During the nineteenth century, periodicals essentially assumed a significant role: in addition to informing, they formed new readers. The social and historical context of the period provided a significant increase in the transatlantic circulation of ideas and culture, which made foreign authors such as Schiller, Goethe, Schlegel, and many others to reach the Brazilian readers. Using the data collection of Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira (BNDigital) – Fundação Biblioteca Nacional, it is possible to investigate the conjunctures and arguments involving the circulation, translation, and imagetic construction of the German author, representative of the Sturm und Drang movement and of Weimar Classicism. We highlight the following periodicals: Diário do Rio de Janeiro, Jornal de Recife and Publicador Maranhense, between 1822 and 1890, to exemplify the occurrences of Schiller in the Brazilian periodicals in Portuguese during the initial phase of their sociocultural and identity formation. Schiller is first introduced in Brazil from theatrical performances, and later his name figures among the pages of national periodicals. Among his translators are the poet Antônio Gonçalves Dias from Maranhão, Professor Bernardo Taveira Júnior from Rio Grande do Sul, João Carlos de Souza Machado from Pernambuco and the writer Tobias Barreto from Sergipe. The journalistic publications about Schiller demonstrate the heterogeneity of strategies for information and dissemination of this german author. Considered a reference in Germany, Schiller is included via the translation dynamics and periodicals circulation as part of an universal canon of men and women of letters who served as a reference or model for the context of national discourses. We understand the Schillerian presence as a relevant mosaic in the formation of foreign cultural memory in Brazilian literature. We treat our corpus – the journalistic occurrences involving Schiller and his works – by quantitative and qualitative analysis. For the quantitative analysis we will rely on Lima's work (2010) and for the qualitative analysis we base on the theoretical-methodological concept of Cultural Transfers by Michel Espagne (2017), added to the research presented in the collection “Transits, exchanges and cultural transfers” by Xavier, Augusti and Mollier (2019), as well as the concept of Anthropophagy as a cultural procedure concerning the foreign, through the studies of Berman (2002), Schwarz (2006) and Bernd (2008). For the socioeconomic approach we resorted to Casanova (2002) and Bourdieu (2002). We used Brazilian periodicals as a reference, present in BNDigital focusing on the presence of Schiller from the transatlantic perspective of the printed history, used in the collections of Granja and Luca (2018), Poncioni; Levin (2018), Abreu (2016), Guimarães (2012) and Barbosa (2007). This work highlights in a transatlantical perspective the under-explored Brazilian's potential of historical periodicals and their contributions beyond the History of the Periodical Press.

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES O presente trabalho objetiva analisar a presença de Friedrich Schiller na imprensa oitocentista brasileira, contribuindo para novos olhares nas áreas de Literatura Comparada, História da Imprensa e Estudos Germanísticos no Brasil. Os jornais assumiram, essencialmente no período oitocentista, um papel significante: além de informar, exerceram a função de formar novos leitores. O contexto social e histórico da época proporcionou um aumento significativo da circulação transatlântica de ideias e bens culturais, fazendo com que autores estrangeiros como Schiller, Goethe, Schlegel e muitos outros chegassem até os leitores brasileiros. Utilizando o acervo de dados da Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira (BNDigital) – Fundação Biblioteca Nacional, são investigadas as conjunturas e argumentos que envolvem a circulação, tradução e a construção imagética do autor alemão, representante do movimento Tempestade e Ímpeto e do Classicismo de Weimar. Destacamos os seguintes jornais: o Diário do Rio de Janeiro, o Jornal de Recife e o Publicador Maranhense, no intervalo que compreende de 1822 a 1890, para exemplificar as ocorrências de Schiller nos periódicos brasileiros de língua portuguesa na fase inicial da sua formação sociocultural e identitária. Schiller é introduzido no país, primeiramente, a partir de apresentações teatrais e, posteriormente, o seu nome figura entre as páginas dos jornais brasileiros. Entre os seus tradutores estão o poeta maranhense Antônio Gonçalves Dias, o professor gaúcho Bernardo Taveira Júnior, o pernambucano João Carlos de Souza Machado e o escritor sergipano Tobias Barreto. As publicações jornalísticas sobre Schiller demonstram uma heterogeneidade de estratégias de informação e divulgação do referido autor. Considerado referência na Alemanha, Schiller é incluído via dinâmicas de tradução e circulação de periódicos como parte de um cânone universal de homens e mulheres de letras que serviram como referência ou modelo no contexto de discursos nacionais. Entendemos a presença schilleriana como mosaico relevante na formação da memória cultural estrangeira da literatura brasileira. Tratamos o nosso corpus – as ocorrências jornalísticas que envolvem Schiller e as suas obras – por análises quantitativas e qualitativas. Para a análise quantitativa, apoiamo-nos no trabalho de Lima (2010) e, para a qualitativa, baseamo-nos no conceito teórico-metodológico de Transferências Culturais, de Michel Espagne (2017), somadas às pesquisas apresentadas na coletânea “Trânsitos, trocas e transferências culturais” de Xavier, Augusti e Mollier (2019), além do conceito de Antropofagia como procedimento cultural relativo ao estrangeiro, através dos estudos de Berman (2002), Schwarz (2006) e Bernd (2008). Para a abordagem socioeconômica, recorremos a Casanova (2002) e Bourdieu (2002). Utilizamos como referencial os periódicos brasileiros presentes na BNDigital, enfocando a presença de Schiller a partir da perspectiva transatlântica da história dos impressos aplicada nas coletâneas de Granja e Luca (2018), Poncioni; Levin (2018), Abreu (2016), Guimarães (2012) e Barbosa (2007).
