Resumo:The aim of this paper is to analyze how the notion of prior knowledge is characterized in articles about reading practices and text comprehension. Based on the Cognitive Linguistics view of language as a categorizer of the world, it was defined that prior knowledge is an element composed of the speaker's linguistic and extralinguistic knowledge that can be activated to help understand new information, such as the frame's concept. With this in mind, several texts addressing the topic were chosen in order to analyze how this type of knowledge is approached. After this analysis, it was realized that the notion of prior knowledge presented by the texts contradicts the Cognitive Linguistics approach. It is this problem of categorization that will be discussed in this paper.
