Resumo:This work deals with the search for truth in criminal proceedings and evaluates the criminal case of the former Minister of East Timor, Mrs Emília Maria Valério Pires. The hypothetical-deductive method and the case study were used to complete this work. In addition, bibliographical references relating to the work and both Brazilian and East Timorese legislation dealing with the subject were used. The search for the truth in criminal proceedings is very important because the State-judge cannot use its force arbitrarily against its own citizens because its fundamental role is to protect its population, particularly those most in need. Furthermore, it is necessary to have a dialogue about the search for truth in criminal proceedings because the truth itself gives the courts the confidence to decide or seek an appropriate solution so that they can bring the case to a close. The absence of truth in the process would generate discomfort on the part of the subjects in the face of the state entity (State-Judge) and they would opt for the other in relation to resolving the conflict.
