Method: 10 children aged between 23 and 34 months, born between July 2020 and July 2021, took part in this study. The instruments used to answer the research objectives were the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory (CDI) and the expressive and receptive language subtests of the Bayley III Scale of Infant and Young Child Development. The data collected was submitted to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis using Spearman's correlation test. Results: There was a positive correlation between the total number of words spoken by the child and their performance in the speech and language assessment, especially expressive language. There was no correlation between the total number of words and receptive language measures. Conclusion: There is a relationship between the total number of words spoken by the child and their performance in the speech assessment, since children perform better in the language assessment as they increase the total number of words spoken. CNPq Objetivo: Este estudo buscou verificar se as informações de quantidade de palavras ditas pela criança se relacionam ao seu desempenho na avaliação da linguagem. Método: Participaram deste estudo 10 crianças, com idade entre 23 e 34 meses, nascidas no período de julho de 2020 a julho de 2021. Os instrumentos utilizados para responder aos objetivos de pesquisa foram o Inventário de Desenvolvimento Comunicativo MacArthur (CDI) e os subtestes de linguagem expressiva e receptiva da Escala Bayley III de desenvolvimento do bebê e da criança pequena. Os dados coletados foram submetidos à análise estatística descritiva e inferencial, pelo teste de correlação de Spearman. Resultados: Houve correlação positiva entre o total de palavras ditas pela criança e o desempenho na avaliação fonoaudiológica da linguagem, em especial a expressiva. Não houve correlação entre o total de palavras e as medidas de linguagem receptiva.
