Resumo:Objective: To verify whether the information on the number of words spoken by the child is related to their performance in the language assessment. Method: 10 children aged between 23 and 34 months, born between July 2020 and July 2021, took part in this study. The instruments used to answer the research objectives were the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventory (CDI) and the expressive and receptive language subtests of the Bayley III Scale of Infant and Young Child Development. The data collected was submitted to descriptive and inferential statistical analysis using Spearman's correlation test. Results: There was a positive correlation between the total number of words spoken by the child and their performance in the speech and language assessment, especially expressive language. There was no correlation between the total number of words and receptive language measures. Conclusion: There is a relationship between the total number of words spoken by the child and their performance in the speech assessment, since children perform better in the language assessment as they increase the total number of words spoken.
