Resumo:In the face of the growing consumption of cosmetic products and the consequent generation of waste, concerns arise about the conscious disposal of these materials by consumers. This study aims to present the profile of cosmetic product disposal in Natal over 18 months, seeking to raise awareness among health authorities about the need for specific legislation. The study was conducted through an exploratory and descriptive approach, analyzing the waste discarded by the population during the actions of the Conscious Disposal Project at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte from March 2022 to September 2023. The collected material was properly separated, considering safety, compliance with the Brazilian Regulatory Agency (Anvisa) regulations, and the purpose of the product, and was subsequently destined for the incineration process. In total, 947 products were collected, with highlights including nail polish, sunscreens, hair products, and lipsticks. The improper disposal of these materials contributes to environmental impacts, emphasizing the need for 5 effective public policies. When combined with public education, these policies have the potential to reverse or mitigate the situation. Therefore, the government, at the municipal, state, and national levels, should adopt stringent measures to promote conscious and sustainable disposal of cosmetic products.
