Resumo:Introduction: during sporting activities, maintaining ideal fluid balance is essential to enhance performance in the activity. Dehydration caused by exercise when it exceeds 2 to 2.5% of body mass loss can affect functional, cognitive, strength and muscular power performance. Objective: the present study aims to evaluate the impact of implementing the American College of Sport Medicine hydration protocol (2007) on the performance of male football athletes. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study of an experimental quantitative nature where 17 under-20 football players from a team from the Brazilian Northeast were evaluated over two days of training, comparing the common hydration carried out by the football team with the hydration strategy maltodextrin based. The hydration strategy was based on the recommendations of the American College of Sport Medicine, the anthropometric characterization was carried out according to the Jackson and Pollock formulas. Perceived effort was assessed using the Borg Subjective Perception Scale. Performance was measured by the Single-Leg Triple Hop Test functional performance test. Results: the percentage of fat found in the players was 13.02 ± 2.63. There was a decrease in weight loss parameters, sweat loss and sweating rate without statistical significance when compared with and without hydration strategy. Conclusion: in this way, there was a reduction in the perception of effort and greater performance given the hydration strategy used.
