Resumo:The existence of public spaces for use by the population, as a source of leisure, is part of everyone's basic rights. The right to the city and leisure are subjects that are little debated, but the population's dissatisfaction and the lack of public spaces for leisure are known to everyone. This work addressed the theme of the right to leisure and public leisure spaces for the population of Natal/RN, and its main objective was to analyze the population's understanding of the importance of leisure, identifying through this theme, how the use of Dom Nivaldo Monte Municipal Park for Natal residents as a public leisure space. To this end, a data collection instrument was constructed to be applied to park visitors. The methodology used was a qualitative, descriptive case study, with on-site interviews. And through this, it was possible to reach the following results: The population of Natal understands the importance of leisure for the quality of life and the importance of public spaces for equal access to this activity, however, the city does not have so many places for this purpose, which demonstrates a certain disregard on the part of municipal authorities towards the population. Regarding Parque Dom Nivaldo, the interviewed residents demonstrated that they did not know much about the space, and pointed out that they did not make active use of it, but they saw potential in the space to be attractive to both the population and tourists, however they highlighted the need for improvements to to become a safer, more accessible and well-known environment for everyone in the city.
