Resumo:Introduction: Tooth whitening has seen a substantial increase in demand from adolescents who wish to change the color of their smile. However, this growth in demand has led to relevant questions regarding the efficacy and safety of this procedure for a younger audience. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate, through an integrative literature review, the efficacy and side effects of at home tooth bleaching in adolescents. Methodology: Bibliographic searches were carried out in PubMed, Scielo and Scopus databases between 2020 and 2023, using the descriptors “tooth whitening”, “tooth bleaching”, “teens”, “teenagers”, “adolescent”. The articles were selected following the PRISMA guidelines, with the inclusion criteria being studies that addressed the effectiveness and adverse effects of home tooth whitening in adolescents. Results: Three articles were obtained, which dealt with the literature sought. The protocols used for home tooth whitening in adolescents were effective, with minimal side effects. However, it was observed that polyethylene strips can present greater risks, such as increased sensitivity and oral irritation. Conclusions: In all the studies found, home tooth whitening in adolescents was effective and showed transient and controllable adverse effects. It is important to carry out further clinical research in order to establish a safe and ideal protocol for this age group.
