Resumo:Objective: To evaluate care for premature babies, focusing on analyzing the structure of two public maternity hospitals that implement the kangaroo method, in the city of Natal, in Rio Grande do Norte. Method: Normative assessment study, based on Donabedian's triad (structure, process and result). Carried out in two reference institutions in Natal during the months of July and August 2023, using a semi-structured checklist. Results: The physical structure of the neonatal units is in line with the requirements of Ordinance GM/MS nº 930/2012, however the beds at the UCINCo were adapted for isolation beds and only one of them had a postpartum mother's house. Of particular note is the sharing of equipment that must be used individually for each bed, such as a stethoscope and tattoo, favoring cross-infections within the hospital. In addition to the unavailability of seats for mothers, as recommended. Noise and lighting control in the NICU was not observed. Conclusion: The maternity hospitals studied, which adopt the kangaroo method, need to improve the proposed structural conditions. Financial investments are necessary for the acquisition, maintenance and renewal of equipment and physical structure to comply with the regulations that regulate care for premature babies through the kangaroo method
