Resumo:Introduction: The evolution of adhesive systems has provided dentists with various protocols and forms of presentation, always aiming to exhibit certain ideal characteristics to ensure intimate contact between substrates and restorative materials. Among the different types available, the most recent ones are universal adhesive systems that can be used in a "multi-mode" format. Therefore, it is essential that the professional knows the most recommended technique for applying the material. Objectives: Analyze the profile of dentists performing adhesive restorative procedures, evaluating the adhesion strategies adopted. Materials and methods: Approved by the CEP-UFRN (protocol 5,269,958), a descriptive cross-sectional observational study was conducted by applying an electronic questionnaire. Dentists registered with CRO-RN and practicing clinically in the state of RN were included. Results: The questionnaire received 114 responses, all of which met the inclusion criteria. 60.5% of the participants were female; 63.1% were in the age group of 22 to 35 years; 68.4% graduated from public institutions; 31.5% had graduated in the last 4 years; 54.4% reported always keeping themselves updated on the topic, mainly through scientific articles (72.8%). The conventional 2-step adhesive system is the most commonly used by professionals (56.1%). For the use of the self-etching system, the selective enamel etching technique was predominant (36%). In the use of universal adhesive systems, total acid etching was prevalent (42.1%). Conclusion: This study revealed that the interviewed professionals always seek to stay updated on adhesion protocols, especially through scientific sources, which has allowed for the use of increasingly effective protocols. However, the use of the simplified adhesive system is still predominant, and the protocol recommended by the literature for the use of universal adhesives does not yet seem to be prevalent.
