Introduction: leukemias are a heterogeneous group of neoplasms. They occur due to the somatic mutation and monoclonal replication of cancerous hematopoietic progenitor cells, of myeloid or lymphoid lineage, and from this they infiltrate the bone marrow, blood and tissues. In the world, in 2020, ther...

In the world, in 2020, there were 32,761 deaths. In 2022, in Brazil, there were 762, with 18 in Rio Grande do Norte. They account for 28% of all types of neoplasms occurring in childhood. Objective: To describe the epidemiological profile and analyze the temporal trend of mortality from pediatric leukemias in Brazil and in Rio Grande do Norte, in the period from 2011 to 2021. Methods: Ecological time series study, using secondary data from the Mortality Information System, DATASUS and Atlas On-line of Mortality (INCA). The number of deaths in the pediatric age group (0 to 19 years), in the Brazilian scenario and in the state of Rio Grande do Norte (RN), between the years 2011 to 2021 was treated. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used by trend analysis with the Joinpoint regression model. Results: In the studied period, in Brazil, there were 9,604 deaths from leukemias in children and adolescents, with a high number for the year 2012. In RN, there were 225 deaths, with the highest number for the year 2016. As for the Brazilian epidemiological profile, there is a higher number of deaths in adolescents aged 15 to 19 (27.3%), male (57.4%), with unknown education (45.6%), of white race/color (46.4%), victimized by lymphoid leukemias (57.1%), mainly in the southeast region of the country. In RN, there is a higher frequency of deaths in adolescents aged 15 to 19 (27.3%), male (59.6%), with unknown education (52.4%), of brown race/color (44.9%), affected by lymphoid leukemias. The time series analysis pointed out, for the age group of 0 to 19 years, in both sexes, a decreasing trend in Brazilian mortality (APC = -1.54%; 95% CI -2.86:-0.22, p < 0.05), whose rate went from 1.48 to 1.31/100,000, while the trends of the RN state were considered stable. Conclusion: the findings of this research evidenced the decrease in mortality from leukemias in the child and adolescent population at the national level and stability in the state of RN, for both sexes. The exploration of these results can guide managers and researchers, strategically, in the evaluation of public policies, reorganization of programs and decision-making for health interventions associated with cancer control actions. |

The exploration of these results can guide managers and researchers, strategically, in the evaluation of public policies, reorganization of programs and decision-making for health interventions associated with cancer control actions.
