Resumo:This study aims to verify the association between the use of anxiolytics and the degree of anxiety among students at a Brazilian university. This is a cross-sectional, correlational, descriptive, comparative study with a quantitative approach, with undergraduate and postgraduate students from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. The instruments used to meet the objectives of the proposal were: a sociodemographic questionnaire for university students; an academic profile data questionnaire; a health profile assessment questionnaire; and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. The results of the survey show, in short, that the participants are undergraduate students in the health sciences, under 30 years of age, who share a residence with other people. A total of 1,050 students took part in the survey. Of these, 510 (48.6%) participants claimed to have already used anxiety medication and 364 (34.7%) had a medical indication for its use. In addition, of the 689 undergraduate students, 341 (49.5%) have used medication for anxiety, of which 193 (28%) have a mild degree of anxiety. Among the 361 postgraduate students, 169 (46.8%) claimed to have used medication for anxiety, 99 of whom (27.4%) had a mild degree of anxiety. When verifying the association between the use of medication and the degree of anxiety, it was found that among postgraduate students, 40 (23.7%) used medication for this purpose, even with a minimal degree of anxiety. Therefore, there is a need to focus on student mental health, and the following alignment of preventive and control actions, limiting the use of psychotropic drugs to indispensable cases.
