description The present study started from the principle of the importance of water for society and in the production of urban spaces, having as a field of observation the transformations in the central and peripheral areas of the neighborhood of Jatobá. The general objective of this work is to describe the importance of water supply in the production of urban space. To this end, a spatial and temporal cut was made in recent decades, between the years 2000-2021, in an analysis of legal frameworks approved by the city council for the respective neighborhood, as well as the development of public policies and infrastructure. The research had as a methodological base, the analysis of the concrete space, in the observation of the main influencing agents in the space and the dynamics that it comes to possess, through the relation of the water and the urban space, how much it provided meanings, growth and local dynamism, as well as the emergence of new areas on its periphery, marked by inequalities in access to water and sanitation, essential elements for human life. On the other hand, the development of infrastructures, favored the central areas, with a dynamism in the several sectors, having as priorities of the public administration in the analyzed period. Finally, we believe that the management of water resources and urban planning must go hand in hand so that problems related to the absence or lack of water in homes are minimized. In addition, it was important to observe that investments in the operation of the water distribution system and urban planning can contribute to optimizing the best quality and quantity of water, resulting in the improvement of the production of urban space for the population of the Jatobá neighborhood.

O presente estudo partiu do princípio da importância da água para a sociedade e na produção dos espaços urbanos, tendo como campo de observação as transformações nas áreas centrais e periféricas do bairro do Jatobá. O trabalho tem como objetivo geral descrever a importância do abastecimento hídrico na produção do espaço urbano da cidade de Patos-PB e no bairro do Jatobá. Para tal, foi feito um recorte temporal nas últimas décadas, entre os anos de 2000-2021, onde foram identificados marcos legais aprovados para o respectivo bairro, bem como o desenvolvimento de políticas públicas. A pesquisa constatou que a relação entre a água e o espaço urbano na cidade de Patos e no Jatobá, proporcionou um significativo desenvolvimento e dinamismo no espaço urbano local, como também o surgimento de novas áreas nas periferias, marcadas pela desigualdade de acesso à água e saneamento básico, elementos essenciais para a vida humana. Por outro lado, o desenvolvimento de infraestruturas favoreceu áreas centrais com a dinamização de diversos setores econômicos, sendo prioridades da administração pública no período analisado. Por fim, consideramos que a gestão dos recursos hídricos e o planejamento urbano devem andar lado a lado para que os problemas relacionados à ausência ou falta de água nas residências sejam mínimos.
