Resumo:This article consists of a literature review (journals and books) on the concepts of environment, development, and sustainable tourism, as well as their interconnections. The aim was to develop ideas related to these subjects that result in a way of thinking and conducting tourism activities that can contribute more actively to the interlinkage between development and planetary sustainability. This issue needs to be debated by tourism stakeholders, as they should play a leading role in the conservation of natural resources. Some of the main global events that have elevated sustainability and the pursuit of sustainable development as one of the most relevant issues in the beginning of this millennium are presented, generating an analysis of the evolution of scientific knowledge that led to the conception of the Political-Democratic Paradigm or Sustentacentrism in recent decades. Finally, suggestions and reflections are motivated regarding the theme, its incorporation, and movements of engagement concerning the concepts and practices of sustainable tourism by all participants and stakeholders interested in the sector
