Resumo:Introduction: Pregnancy is a complex and differentiated phase of life that involves many physical and psychosocial transformations. It is a period of great expectations and emotional influences, permeated by feelings and discoveries in the face of the new roles that will be exercised within the home. Thus, the function of primary care in providing quality and humanized prenatal and puerperal care with the objective of welcoming women from the beginning of pregnancy is paramount, seeking, at the end of pregnancy, the birth of a healthy child and maternal and neonatal well-being. In this context, the participation of men in the reproductive process is explored, allowing their choice to be a father, and in the affective relationship with their children that can be established with prenatal care. However, cultural and professional factors tend to distance men from prenatal care. Objective: to identify the meaning of prenatal care for men, in the light of the Discourse of the Collective Subject. Methodology: this is a qualitative research of descriptive and exploratory character that had as scenario two health units selected by lottery among the four existing in the municipality of Nova Floresta/PB. The subjects of this study were the companions of the pregnant women attended in the health units drawn and registered in the Prenatal program and who had at least three consultations performed. In addition, the semi-structured interview was used and the data analysis was performed through the Discourse of the Collective Subject (CSD) obtained by verbal analysis issued in the first person (collective) singular. Results: All eight partners interviewed are biological parents of the current conceptus, with variation in the age range between 18 and 30 years. They have a family income of less than one minimum wage. Regarding the number of consultations of the pregnant women, six were between three and six prenatal consultations and five of them with gestational age in the second trimester and all started their follow-ups in the 1st trimester of pregnancy. Of these, four pregnant women were in the 1st pregnancy. No participant interviewed accompanied the pregnant woman in the current prenatal consultations. Discussion: Nine DCS were elaborated from the key expressions and central ideas emitted by the participants' statements. The results showed that the partners present imprecision or doubt regarding the meaning and importance of prenatal care, identified by the lack of knowledge about the program and its practice in the service. In turn, they recognize the importance of the pregnant woman in carrying out the consultations, for reflecting on the well-being of the pregnant woman and the health of the baby, besides being a moment of resolving concerns and doubts of the pregnant woman and the couple that can influence the quality of life of the pregnant woman. They affirmed their desire to be present at the consultations and five said they felt pregnant. Educational actions aimed at the father are not present in their health units. They consider that fatherhood can positively impact the family and the couple. They did not report difficulties in accessibility to the prenatal service. Final Thoughts: It is concluded that the man wants and can participate in the consultations and monitoring of prenatal care throughout the pregnancy process, however there are several conditions that should be reviewed to improve public policies on men's health to insert him in the care within the collective health.
