Resumo:This dissertation intends to build an analysis of the existing relations between the construction of the Sanatório Meduna is the ideal progress and modernity existing in Teresina in the 1950s. Teresina was founded in 1852, planned to be a modern city in the midst of a province that still carried colonial aspects. Sanatório Meduna inserted in the city in a context of profound lack of assistance to mental health. The institution and its creator, Clidenor de Freitas Santos, played an indispensable role in the constitution of Piauí psychiatry. Thus, in order to analyze the relationship between the Sanatório Meduna and the modernization of the urban space in Teresina, we delved into other important issues for the theme, such as how mental health care was developed in the state, what is the profile of crazy for that society or what are the characteristics of the treatments applied, among other subjects. Consequently, we investigated the necessary events that led Clidenor de Freitas Santos to consider the construction of the Sanatório Meduna, how care was given to the insane before and after the nosocomy, without forgetting the importance of Clidenor de Freitas Santos in this process; which conception about madness existed in Piauí in this cut; the relationship between madness and criminality; what is the social profile of patients at the Sanatório Meduna, among other aspects. As a source, newspapers, reports, testimonials and messages from the governors of Piauí, the previous files of the general picture of the patients of the Sanatório Meduna, the regiment of the Sanatório Meduna and an interview with the daughter of Clidenor de Freitas Santos were used. With the analysis of this documentation, associated with the historiographical debate of the period, we verified the importance of the construction of the Sanatório Meduna, inserted in a scenario present in many other Brazilian cities, referring to the modernization of the urban space and assistance to the insane.
