Resumo:The project developed in this work aims to determine the feasibility of an academic rocket engine made of fiberglass with polyester resin and the addition of flame-retardant additives. For this, first, the engine had to be dimensioned, considering the mechanical properties of the composite, to determine the minimum thicknesses that its structure could support. After dimensioning, the engine was manufactured, so that the static combustion test could be carried out. The results of this work were obtained by analyzing the level of structural impairment and the mass lost by the rocket engine components after the static test. The posttest analysis was satisfactory. The engine material withstood well the high temperatures and pressures it was subjected to. The envelope withstood the efforts and did not suffer any structural damage that could compromise its integrity. Furthermore, because of flame-retardant additives, its mass loss was almost negligible. The only negative occurrence, however already expected, occurred in the nozzle, which presented a flaw in its throat, in the region where the silica ring is located.
