Water scarcity is a growing challenge across the world. Several research sources indicate
that in the coming years a significant portion of the world’s population may be subject
to water scarcity. This is due to a combination of factors, including climate change,
deforestation, increased demand caused by population growth, urbanization and especially
inadequate management of water resources. The potential for home automation to mitigate
this problem is increasingly in focus. Through the use of technology and the Internet
of Things (IoT), it is possible to optimize the use of water in homes, contributing to
its economy, having a better management of this resource and consequently a greater
longevity of it for the next generations. With automation systems it is possible to control
and monitor the use of water in real time. They can identify consumption patterns, limit
the flow of water in showers and faucets, set a scheduled time for a certain task, all to
ensure that water is only used when and where it is needed. For example, automatic
sprinklers can be programmed to water gardens during the driest times of the day, they
can be automatically turned off when it rains or even be programmed to only turn on for
a certain period. Another option is for water control in reservoirs, in which it is possible
to determine how much water should be in a given reservoir with the aid of flow sensors,
for example, or what is the maximum limit of a reservoir with a level sensor, indicating
which can only add water up to a certain point, avoiding water overflow and consequently
waste. All these points define the objective of the work, to combine the world shortage
problem with home automation through a low cost device. With the prototype developed,
it will be possible to apply it to different situations, two examples of which have already
been mentioned, automation in irrigation of plantations and control of water in reservoirs.
With it, through an application on the phone and a WiFi connection, it will be possible
to determine various parameters of use such as the volume to be used, for how long a
pump/electrovalve should be turned on at a given time or a simple manual activation all
through the radio frequency communication. In addition to viewing various information
in real time, such as flow in l/min, total volume, whether or not the reservoir limit has
been reached and the current status of a pump, for example. This work will describe
all the theoretical basis of the prototype, the development methodology as well as the
performance of the prototype in the tests carried out. |
