Resumo:The present study seeks to analyze aspects related to the devaluation of state public school libraries, as well as the professional librarian in this field of work. It highlights the current situation of the Secretary of State for Education, Culture, Sport, and Leisure of Rio Grande do Norte, which does not have the position of librarian in its staff. In view of this, the State of Rio Grande do Norte does not comply with the obligation of Federal Law 12.244/2010 (which provides for the universalization of libraries in educational institutions in the country), given that it creates and sanctions ordinances that allocate readapted teachers (regents) in school libraries. The research has as general objective to investigate the impacts of the absence of the professional librarian in relation to the management, operation and services provided by school libraries in the state education network of the municipality of Natal/Rio Grande do Norte. Methodologically, it is bibliographical research, with a qualitative approach, which uses the inductive method of descriptive and exploratory profile, carried out in a selection of schools in the four zones of Natal. As a research technique, it applies a semi-structured interview with school library teachers in four public schools arranged in the north, south, east, and west zones of Natal, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Norte. The results obtained show the limitations that readapted teachers have, and because of this, management, proper functioning, and actions that should be developed in school libraries are impaired. In addition, it observes the allocation of limited financial resources for the proper structuring of school libraries. Considers that it is evident that one of the solutions to try to reduce the problem is to invest in public education, especially in school libraries, creating the position of librarian in the State, carrying out a selection process through a public tender and implementing policies for the development of culture of valuing and recognizing this space, which is so important for the training of people, which is the school library.
