description This work focuses on investigating the influence that the University exerts on the reading habits of university students, directing the sample to students of the Library Science course at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte. The objective of the research is to analyze the students' perceptions about the impacts caused by higher education on their reading habits. For this, as a methodological procedure, the inductive method and the monographic procedure method were used. Data collection carried out through the questionnaire as an extensive research technique and the research is supported by a bibliographical survey with data on student reading index, data on the number of libraries in the State of Rio Grande do Norte and other information. that substantiate. The results obtained reveal that the University has an influence on the way in which students relate to reading, which can positively stimulate the development of this habit, as well as a taste for scientific reading. On the other hand, the negative influence is demonstrated when a considerable number of respondents claim to have difficulty reconciling compulsory academic reading with literary, spontaneous, or recreational reading, while others have lost the taste for the habit. He considers that most students began to cultivate the habit of reading when they entered the university, which is a positive point, but does not mean that the way in which higher education deals with reading is ideal, since a good part of the respondents who started to read more when they entered university, stated that they have difficulty reconciling their mandatory reading with entertainment reading, which can make the habit of reading a robotic and unprofitable activity.

Este trabalho se debruça na investigação acerca da influência que a Universidade exerce sobre os hábitos de leitura dos estudantes universitários, direcionando a amostra aos alunos do curso de Biblioteconomia da Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte. O objetivo da pesquisa é analisar as percepções dos discentes acerca dos impactos causados pelo ensino superior em seus hábitos de leitura. Para isso, como procedimento metodológico, foram utilizados o método indutivo e o método de procedimento monográfico. A coleta de dados feita por meio do questionário como técnica de pesquisa extensiva e a pesquisa como todo é alicerçada por um levantamento bibliográfico com dados sobre índice de leitura de estudantes, a quantidade de bibliotecas no Estado do Rio Grande do Norte e demais informações que fundamentam. Os resultados obtidos revelam que a Universidade tem influência sobre a maneira com que os alunos se relacionam com a leitura, podendo positivamente estimular o desenvolvimento desse hábito, assim como o gosto pela leitura científica. Por outro lado, a influência negativa é demonstrada quando uma quantidade considerável dos respondentes afirma possuir dificuldade em conciliar a leitura acadêmica obrigatória com as leituras literárias, espontâneas ou recreativas, enquanto outros perderam o gosto pelo hábito.
