Additionally, it offers additional benefits such as protection against infections and strengthening of the immune system. The present study aimed to synthesize information about factors that influence early cessation of breastfeeding in the first six months of life. Studies published between 2018 and 2023 were evaluated. The review was based on the analysis of scientific materials, official documents, master's theses, and doctoral dissertations. The World Health Organization (WHO) and other health organizations recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, followed by the gradual introduction of appropriate complementary foods. Early cessation of breastfeeding can occur due to various reasons, such as cultural beliefs, lack of knowledge about health recommendations, social pressures, influence from infant food manufacturers, among others, and is directly associated with health risks for the baby, including increased susceptibility to infections, digestive problems, and a higher likelihood of developing food allergies. Therefore, it is essential for families to receive appropriate guidance and information about the benefits of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and have social support through public policies to prevent early cessation of breastfeeding.
