Resumo:Introduction: Falls in the elderly are a common health problem that can lead to serious injuries, disability and death. Advanced age brings with it a decrease in muscle strength, balance and flexibility, which increase the risk of falls. However, physical exercise has been identified as an effective intervention to prevent falls, in addition to improving quality of life. Physical exercises for preventing falls include strength, balance and flexibility training and are able to improve functional capacity, improve confidence and independence in the elderly. In addition, they can bring other benefits, such as reducing the risk of chronic diseases, improving mental health, and increasing cognitive capacity. Objective: To analyze, through a narrative review, the effects of physical exercises, through balance, strength and proprioception training, in the prevention of falls in the elderly and in the improvement of the quality of life. Methods: Systematic reviews and meta-analyses, published in the last ten years, with samples composed of elderly people of both genders aged 60 years or older, in Portuguese and English, and which evaluated the effects of physical exercise in preventing falls were included. in the elderly and in improving the quality of life. The searches were carried out in the National Library of Medicine (PubMed), CAPES and Google Scholar electronic databases. The descriptors in the English language used were: "eldery of the fall" and "physical exercise". The descriptors in the Portuguese language were: “queda de idosos” and “exercício físico”. The following filters were applied to direct the selection process: articles in the last ten years, systematic reviews, meta-analyses and elderly studies of both genders. Results: Seven articles were included in the research. The articles were published between 2013 and 2020, with a total of approximately 40,000 participants. The studies showed that the applied training protocols, with gradual progression of intensity, professional follow-up, combined exercises and mainly the multicomponent exercises, achieved results in terms of decreasing falls, improving functionality and aerobic capacity in the elderly. Conclusion: Current evidence suggests that physical exercise based on balance, flexibility and strength training in its various forms of intervention has positive effects on preventing falls in the elderly, as well as improving quality of life.
