Resumo:This study aims to investigate whether the Brazilian legal system and public policies are effective in combating discrimination against the elderly. To do so, it was necessary to characterize the nature of age discrimination (ageism), which involves its definition, how it acts, its impacts on physical and mental health, social well-being and the economic aspect of the elderly. For this, discrimination against the elderly in Brazil was also addressed, involving the analysis of the quantity of reports of violence, the types of violence, who practices them and against whom they are practiced and their respective schooling, current general and elderly populations and their future and current projections. With the same objective, a survey of laws and public policies to protect the elderly in Brazil was carried out. In addition, strategies to mitigate discrimination against the elderly were addressed through planning and law, educational interventions and intergenerational contact. To fulfill this objective, a research was carried out which, as to the way of approach of the object was qualitative and quantitave, as to the objective was descriptive and explanatory and, as to the procedure, was bibliographical. Finally, the conclusions are presented where we conclude that the fight against discrimination against the elderly in Brazil is not being effective and where we point out the strategies to combat ageism and its viability given the good correlation between the projections of GDP and growth population of the elderly.
