Resumo:Energy has been essential for human progress throughout history, from the domestication of fire to the Industrial Revolution. However, the intensive use of fossil fuels has resulted in global environmental damage. In view of this, countries like Brazil are seeking more sustainable energy sources, with a focus on solar energy. The state of Rio Grande do Norte has great potential for solar energy production, with significant growth in installed capacity and the number of solar plants in recent years. In this context, this research aimed to answer the question: what is the scenario of photovoltaic energy generation in Rio Grande do Norte in 2023? Thus, the general objective of the study was to analyze photovoltaic energy generation in the state of Rio Grande do Norte. Specific objectives included examining the Brazilian solar energy landscape, identifying key projects operating in the state, and assessing the environmental impact of photovoltaic energy generation. This research revealed that photovoltaic energy generation in the state has significant potential, with substantial growth in installed capacity and the number of solar plants in recent years. However, despite being clean energy, this generation can have environmental impacts, such as the production of toxic waste during the disposal of solar panels.
