Resumo:For many years, investment in basic sanitation in Brazil occurred in a timely and inconsistent manner, generating great inequality and a deficit in access to services, mainly in the collection and treatment of sewage. In the Northeast Region, only 49% of the municipalities have sewage systems. Universalized access to this service is of fundamental importance, as the inappropriate release of effluents into the environment can cause various social, environmental and economic impacts. In pursuit of the effectiveness of the act of sanitation, sanitation must be configured as a generating theme in the education processes, in view of this, the central campus of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte develops an environmental and health education project entitled “Knowing the ETE” , which presents the UFRN Sewage Treatment Station through a guided tour, enabling visitors to raise awareness about the importance of sewage treatment. Therefore, this work aimed to characterize the public that visited ETE UFRN in the 10-year interval, from 2012 to 2022, in addition to developing a methodology to verify the impact of visitation on environmental and health awareness, assessing whether it is possible to change the perception of visitors. To this end, a survey was carried out on the data collected by the project during this period, as well as questionnaires were developed and applied in two phases, before and after the visits. According to the tabulation and comparison of the data collected, it was possible to observe that the predominance of visits are carried out by the public of higher education, from public institutions and internal to UFRN, demonstrating the need to expand the public of the project “Knowing the ETE”. With the application of questionnaires to 07 groups representing this public, it was evaluated that after the visit there were changes in the answers to the questions asked, demonstrating that there was a change in the environmental and health perception of the visitors and that the activity is characterized as an environmental awareness tool.
