Resumo:Introduction: Epidemiological studies involving oral clefts are necessary to guide public policies for prevention and treatment according to the local reality. Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of oral clefts and the severity of dentofacial deformity in patients with cleft lip and palate treated at the Cleft Lip and Palate Rehabilitation Center of Rio Grande do Norte (CREFIRN). Materials and methods: The sample consisted of clinical records and dental study models of patients with cleft lip and palate treated at CREFIRN from 2021 to 2023. The investigated variables were: gender, age, place of birth, type of oral cleft, cleft laterality, presence of craniofacial syndromes, performance of corrective surgeries, and degree of dentofacial deformity severity. The Goslon and Bauru indexes were used to evaluate the degree of dentofacial deformity in patients with unilateral and bilateral incisive foramen clefts, respectively. Results: The sample consisted of 144 patients, predominantly male children. Unilateral incisive foramen cleft was the most prevalent in the sample, while women showed a higher prevalence of complete post-incisive foramen cleft. Unilateral clefts were more prevalent, with no preference for side. The sample had a low prevalence of craniofacial syndromes. Most lip and palate plastic surgeries were performed in early childhood. No secondary alveolar bone grafting or orthognathic surgery was performed in the sample individuals. The eastern region of Rio Grande do Norte state had the highest prevalence of cleft lip and palate, with the city of Natal concentrating the highest number of cases. The Goslon and Bauru-4 indexes were the most prevalent. Conclusions: There appears to be a higher prevalence of non-syndromic unilateral incisive foramen clefts in newborns, children, and young males, rehabilitated with cheiloplasty and palatoplasty in early childhood, from the eastern region of Rio Grande do Norte, particularly from the city of Natal. However, underreporting of cases is possible.
