Resumo:The school library is a space rich in information that can and should be used among the primary tools of the teaching and learning process. With the intention of answering how the Library can contribute to the teaching process and become an extension of the classroom in practice, describing the relevance of the library in the context of the teaching and learning process of students of Elementary School I. The study is a qualitative research, of a basic nature in the context of a public school, in the municipality of Santo Antônio/RN, having as a data collection instrument two questionnaires in the form of interviews, each containing 10 questions, built through curiosity about the work done where in theory should be a school library, But it's a reading room. The collected sample had 50 responses from 1st-5th grade teachers; and 10 responses from the professional who works in the reading room. The analysis of the collected data was carried out through the theoretical foundation used in this research and pointed out that, in general, all teachers believe in the importance of using the reading room as an extension of their pedagogical practices. The results of the analysis pointed out that unfortunately the school does not have the structure for a school library, does not have an adequate environment, does not have qualified professionals, there is no effective integration between "reading room" and school community, and in the teacher perception, the space of the reading room has left something to be desired in relation to its attractiveness, organization and furniture. However, the activities carried out in the reading room have produced good results in the formation of the school's students, such as: Development and stimulation of reading, writing, speaking and strengthening of social and cultural interactions.
