Resumo: | When reflecting on contemporary media and its facility in producing and consuming
content within cyberspace, it is observed that there is a possibility that this flow is
influencing the local identity representation, especially the identity of the municipality of
Ielmo Marinho in Rio Grande do Norte. Thus, there is in this intercourse an important
gap for investigation, with regard to the identification and construction of the identity of
the ielmomarinhense. In this sense, when verifying the accessibility and expansion of
YouTube, as an alternative medium, as well as the scarce information and research
pertinent to the municipality of Ielmo Marinho. With this perspective, it is noticeable the
relevance of investigating the possible relationship between media discourses on YouTube
and the identity representations of that municipality. Thus, the present doctoral study had
the general objective of perceiving and describing the identity representations of the
ielmomarinhense, as reflected in the media discourses through YouTube (involved in
cyberspace), which featured the social space of the municipality between the years 2009
to 2018. In order to help achieve this central objective, authors such as Hall (2011); Silva
(2014); Woodward (2014); Chartier (1990; 1991); Canclini (1998; 2008); Castells
(1999a) and Pollak (1992) were the theoretical beacons of this study, for discussions in
terms of identity, difference and representation, while for notes on media investigations
on YouTube and the conceptual notions of cyberspace, it was taken as base Gibson (1984),
Lévy (1996; 2000), Lemos (2002; 2009; 2015), Castells (1999b; 2003), Burgess and
Green (2009). As a strategy to design the methodological path, this study, in view of its
proposed objectives, is classified as an exploratory-descriptive research, based on the qualitative approach, under the support of quantitative bias. For organization and
subsequent analysis of the materials, the study was guided by two distinct technical
procedures, initially the historical and ethnographic method was used to reconstruct the
history of Ielmo Marinho, in which studies were carried out based on the documents that
portray the history of the municipality in the light of Santos (2015) and Fernandes (2013;
2018). In a second step, as an aid to the identification of the object of study, which were
the media discourses present on YouTube, virtual ethnography (online) was used in
congruence with statistical studies. Therefore, a survey was obtained as a corpus of
analysis of a sample of 163 videos published on YouTube between 2009 and 2018. The
materials compiled were provoked and interpreted based on Bardin's Content Analysis
(2011). In this sense, with regard to the identity results found, It was observed that in the
municipality of Ielmo Marinho there are so many identity representations in what was
known as ielmomarinhense identity that for various reasons it is not built from a
homogeneous discourse, instead it is classified as hybrid. Moreover, It is characterized
for elements that are associated with the rural characteristics of the municipality, its
religious festivities, the local pineapple economy and the involvement of public agents in
cases of corruption.Therefore, this study identified that the media discourses present on
YouTube can participate in the configuration of the social space, attributing values and
creating meaning for the identity representation of the ielmomarinhense. |
