Riassunto:This dissertation aims to understand the uses of the past in the construction of the place in the State of Rio Grande Norte from the writings of the intellectual from Pernambuco and founding partner of the IHGRN, Vicente de Lemos, from 1907 to 1912. This selection is justified by the writings of the intellectual: the first refers to the publication of the Papéis Velhos column; the second concerns the year of printing of the author's only book, entitled Capitães-mores e Governadores do Rio Grande do Norte. The act of turning over old papers at the beginning of the 20th century was far from being a disinterested activity. The Question of Grossos would have been the trigger for the systematized document search in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. Thus, in the face of such an undertaking, when going through the archives and paging the dusty documentation, Lemos not only selected the documents that were interesting to the history of the State, but also defined it, together with the dominant group, Albuquerque Maranhão, which history should be told. Through writing, the scholar significate the State‟s space, using its history, attributing meaning and value to it, transforming it into a place. In this way, the scholar also contributed to creating a vision of the past and a project for the future. Thus, to better understand this intellectual, this work focuses on his sociability, on his work as a historian and politician. In order to understand how the scholar's historiography helped to create the place Rio Grande do Norte, this research is dedicated to analyzing his writings, identifying the characters, the facts, that is, the version of the past that he intended to tell. With regard to the methodology, it was carried out through documental survey, tabulation and qualitative, quantitative and evidence analysis of newspapers, magazines, books, Reports of President of Province and Governors, almanacs and other texts.
