| Resumo: | The National Policy on Solid Waste (Law 12,305/10), in its article 54, established a deadline for the implementation of environmentally appropriate disposal of waste throughout the country. Based on this legal provision, the effectiveness of environmental legislation is put into question and presents a number of factors for their implementation, including the predominance of the anthropocentric view of the environment. In this perspective, the objective of this paper is to investigate how effective are the provisions of the aforementioned article 54, specifically in the State of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil, thusly analysing the specific legislation as well as concrete data provided by state public agencies. Based on the exploratory, explanatory, qualitative and quantitative documentary-bibliographic research conducted, it is possible to argue that the effectiveness of the article in discussion cannot be gained solely by the fulfilment of the deadline provided by law, but for the purpose for which it is intended, namely, the eradication of dumping grounds. Therefore, the anthropocentric view must be reversed as soon as possible, in order to maintain an ecologically balanced environment |
