Resumo:This work is the result of historical and archaeological research on aircraft and vessels that, inserted in the context of the Second World War and the war effort, between the years 1942 and 1945, had an accident or were sunk on the Potiguar coast or in the Exclusive Economic Zone adjacent to the territorial sea of the State of Rio Grande do Norte. The objective was to study such aircraft and vessels to create zoning areas of archaeological potential. For this purpose, bibliographic sources referring to the Second World War in the context of Brazil and the state of Rio Grande do Norte, information about shipwrecks collected from online sources and official reports of air accidents were analyzed. The approach to the sources considers the issues of Historical Archeology and Underwater Archaeology. The methodology applied to achieve the research objectives was based on procedures in the field of Historical Archeology. The first procedure was the survey of written and iconographic sources. The second procedure was the typology of vessels and aircraft surveyed. The third procedure materialized from the archaeological zoning. To create the zones and archaeological potential, the Google Earth Pro tool was used. The work begins with a theoretical conceptualization about archaeology, historical archeology, underwater archeology and quickly discusses the archeology of the World Wars, public archeology and the underwater cultural heritage. Then, it brings the historical context of the conflict. Subsequently, it addresses the typological survey of aircraft and vessels, considering the attack coordinates of the vessels collected from online sources, as well as the possible places where the aircraft sank based on the iconography produced by Fundação Rampa. Finally, an archaeological zoning chart is presented with a view to preserving and protecting this submerged cultural heritage.
