| Resumo: | This work seeks to understand the role of civil society in defending the rights of children and adolescents. Based on a literature review, we sought to present a history of the notions of childhood and adolescence, as well as the law in relation to these subjects, as well as an overview of how the rights of children and adolescents were established in Brazil. It was observed that childhood is a category endowed with historicity, whose readings and forms of interpretation vary according to time. In this sense, the changes in the legal system on the subject in Brazil were considered as part of this process that is historical. The importance of the advances represented by the implementation of the doctrine of integral protection, in opposition to the theory of the irregular situation, was highlighted. It was found that the permanence of discriminatory practices rooted in common sense affects the exercise of citizenship by children and adolescents. |
