Therefore, for society, preserving history is ensuring that future generations will have access to culture and will experience, in a participatory way, cultural activities. In this sense, it's necessary to understand the value of society's participation in cultural development in public spaces. Thus, the general objective of this study is to investigate the challenges and contradictions of revitalization in the public space of tourist and cultural use of Beco da Lama in Natal, Rio Grande do Norte. For this purpose, the methodology used was descriptive - exploratory in terms of objectives, with a qualitative study approach, where open questions were created so that residents could respond freely, giving more depth to the researched theme and analyzed with the technique of co-occurrence. With regard to the results, it was possible to emphasize the importance of Beco da Lama for the cultural history of the city of Natal, the lack of incentive in the cultural development of the place, which raised the contradiction regarding the motivation that made the Beco be revitalized. Despite this, there are some small cultural actions that took place in the place, such as the Feira Literária do Beco da Lama (FLIBECO). However, there are still few actions and residents mentioned some new ideas to be able to improve the development of cultural activities, such as: musical events, use of samba to tell the story of Beco and handicraft fair. With this, it can be concluded that for the cultural practice of the place, it's necessary to meet the exposed needs, one of which is the challenge of obtaining an incentive that expresses an interest in maintaining the history, including residents and regulars of the region, with the consequence tourist practices.

A partir do Patrimônio Cultural torna possível idealizar a importância do bem, seja material ou imaterial. Portanto, para a sociedade, preservar a história é garantir que as gerações futuras terão acesso à cultura e irão vivenciar, de forma participativa, as atividades culturais. Nesse sentido, faz-se necessário entender o valor da participação da sociedade no desenvolvimento cultural em espaços públicos. Desse modo, o objetivo geral desse estudo é investigar os desafios e contradições da revitalização no espaço público de uso turístico e cultural do Beco da Lama em Natal no Rio Grande do Norte. Com esse propósito, a metodologia utilizada foi a descritiva – exploratória quanto aos objetivos, sendo a abordagem do estudo qualitativa. Assim, foram elaboradas questões abertas para que os moradores pudessem responder livremente, dando mais profundidade sobre a temática pesquisada e analisadas com a técnica de co-ocorrência. No que tange aos resultados, foi possível ressaltar a importância do Beco da Lama para a história cultural da cidade de Natal, a falta de incentivo no desenvolvimento cultural do local, o que levantou a contradição referente à motivação que fizera o Beco ser revitalizado. Apesar disso, há algumas pequenas ações culturais que aconteceram no local como a Feira Literária do Beco da Lama (FLIBECO). Entretanto, ainda são poucas ações e os moradores citaram algumas novas ideias para poder melhorar no desenvolvimento de atividades culturais, como: eventos musicais, uso do samba para relatar a história do Beco e feira de artesanato.
