Resumo:Throughout the midtwentieth century, with the presence of women and activist movements, black feminisms began to develop, aiming to include the realities of African women in Western feminism, fighting for respect not only for gender issues, but also for the implications of colonialism, ethnicity, and imperialism present in their culture. In this context, we looked for a work written by an African woman, which in its plot showed representations of patriarchal discourses. For this, our purpose is to carry out an analysis of the novel Purple Hibiscus (201 7) by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie from the perspective of Bakhtin’s theory of the novel in cooperation with feminist criticism. Thus, we discuss the construction of female characters from Bakhtin's (2015) conception of character, as well as its relations with the authoritarian discourse of patriarchy, using black African feminist studies ( OYĚWÙMÍ, 2021) . From this dialogical study it was possible to make observations and reflections on how the two characters were represented in the novel (world of art), as wel l the context still experienced by several women in the world of life.
