Resumo:Odontogenic cysts are categorized according to their origin as developmental cysts (DDCs) or inflammatory cysts (ICs). This research evaluated HSP27 immunoexpression in cases of DCs and COCs to better clarify whether this protein participates in their pathogenesis, since these entities are among the most common lesions of odontogenic origin in the maxillomandibular complex. Ten cases of DCs and 10 CCOs were submitted to morphological analysis of their characteristics and were classified according to the intensity of inflammatory infiltrate and epithelial thickness. HSP27 expression was evaluated using immunohistochemistry, examining the positivity, distribution and intensity of marking in the regions of the cystic epithelial lining and the expression was classified in score 0 (negative), 1 (weak), 2 (moderate) and 3 (intense). Data were submitted to descriptive analysis and Fisher's Exact Test. A significance level of 5% (p < 0.05) was stablished. Morphological analysis showed that thin epithelium predominated in DCs and normal epithelial thickness in COCs, as well as a greater amount of mitoses in the suprabasal layer of COCs. HSP27 was more expressed in the basal (90%) and suprabasal (80%) layers of DCs. Regarding the COCs, the basal region obtained absent/light marking in 70% of the cases. There was a statistically significant association in the basal region of DCs in relation to COCs (p = 0.020) and in the upper region of the epithelium, there was greater immunostaining in COCs compared to DCs (p<0.001). The immunoexpression of HSP27 identified in DCs and COCs suggests its participation in the development of these lesions, possibly influencing the stratification and differentiation of the cystic epithelium.
