Resumo: | Assessing food intake and analyzing diet quality are recognized as essential steps to
identify possible associations between eating habits and health outcomes. For this, it is
necessary to select and manage practical tools that are attentive to the objectives set out in the
investigation. The present study aimed to identify the Food Frequency Questionnaires (FFQ)
included for the Brazilian population, through a narrative review of the literature, which
sought to answer which FFQ models are in compliance with the guidelines and paradigms of
the Food Guide for the Brazilian population. We found 19 studies of development, validation
and/or reproducibility testing of Food Frequency Questionnaires (FFQ) that were used as a
food survey tool, and another 5 studies in which ESQUADA was used exclusively to assess
diet quality. It was found that although studies with an emphasis on the FFQ address the same
topic, there are a large number of differences when it comes to their regionalization and
methodologies; and that the ESQUADA method appears to be innovative and promising, as it
allows the classification of food consumption based on processing levels, without having as a
requirement the application of an associated food survey. Based on these results, we can
conclude that the ESQUADA method demonstrates potential value for use as an alternative
way of evaluating the quality of the diet in epidemiological research. Finally, considering the
dietary diversity of the different regions of the country, the need for a validated and tested
FFQ for the Northeastern population was noted. |
