Resumo:The strong climate changes in the world have caused great disasters and the biggest responsible for them are the greenhouse gases. In an attempt to reduce the emission of these gases, the Paris Agreement was signed, which aims to reduce global warming by the current century. Eliminating carbon emissions from most of the world's energy-generating sectors, which still make use of polluting fossil fuels in their processes, is the main challenge for the goal stipulated in the agreement to be reached. Hydrogen (H2) has the potential to produce energy, generate and distribute heat and power with little environmental impact, since its combustion has only water as a byproduct. H2 can be produced from different raw materials, and the processes used to obtain it are divided mainly into: production from fossil fuels and production from renewable sources. Currently, the global production of hydrogen is still dominated by fossil fuels, but the interest in the production of green hydrogen in the world today has grown significantly. In this context, this work has the objective of approaching the forms of hydrogen production, comparing the sustainable (green hydrogen) with the unsustainable ones, with emphasis on the evaluation of the economic, social and environmental impacts of the production of green hydrogen by anaerobic fermentation. For this, a bibliographic review was performed with research in scientific articles, dissertations, and other reliable sources that approached the discussed theme; these materials were searched in google academic, scielo, and books. After reading and analyzing several texts and data found it is clear that the process of hydrogen production by anaerobic fermentation is environmentally interesting, considering the possibility of using agroindustrial waste as substrates that are often discarded in the environment, or even underutilized. However, its cost is still very high when compared mainly to processes that use fossil fuels. Therefore, there is a need for the study and development of tools and optimization of the fermentative H2 production process. The important social role that this process plays in a community has also been verified. Hence the importance of this review.
