Resumo:Introduction: Speech therapy is the science that studies the processes of human communication, among them, the development and acquisition of oral language. Which depends on an apparatus of genetic and environmental factors that influence it. Therefore, the demand for child language assistance in school clinics is growing, forming long waiting lists and prolonged time for assistance. Objective: To describe the language profile (receptive and expressive) of children with language complaints enrolled on the waiting list at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte. Methods: Descriptive study, approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the University Hospital Onofre Lopes, UFRN. Data mapping carried out from a file made available by the UFRN clinical school. Subjects with registration forms whose complaint was related to children's language were included and those who did not accept to participate in the research, did not answer the phone calls and the guardian did not answer the collection questionnaire were excluded. Produced by the researchers with language made easy for parents. Results: The sample consisted of 48 subjects, and the main concordances were listed: 31 male subjects, 35 subjects sought care at preschool age (from 0 to 6 years), complaints arose between 3 months to 5 years of age, of which 48 were related to speech, 47 of the subjects are enrolled in day care centers or schools and reported reading and writing difficulties and 42 subjects have been waiting for care for more than two years. Conclusion: The profile attended showed the pattern of boys, aged 4 to 10 years, waiting for more than two years on the waiting list, with more significant delays in receptive and expressive language, attending school or daycare centers, referred by Neurologists, with predominantly speech complaints, without hearing difficulties and with reading and writing difficulties.
