Resumo:Studies on the application of algae in the pharmaceutical field showed the identification of several substances in the composition of these aquatic organisms. The possibility of their cultivation on a large scale also contributed to make them a target of interest for the industry, more precisely the food and pharmaceutical industry. Data found on algae show that, in order to survive, as well as marine organisms develop mechanisms and strategies to not perish, in response to the challenges that arise in nature, they also end up producing these mechanisms that are called secondary metabolites. There are researchers who indicate that the fact that plant organisms are devoid of motility and immune system, made them develop alternative defense strategies, which end up involving the huge variety of secondary metabolites as tools to overcome stress restrictions, adapt to changing environment and survive. Thus, these organisms can be very useful in the development of new agents for application in medicines, foods and cosmetics. It is true that during the last four decades studies have been carried out and several new compounds present in these sea creatures have been isolated and it has been found that many of these substances have demonstrated biological activity.
