Resumo:Since prehistoric times, society has used cosmetics to care for and improve its image. The Egyptians were the first users of cosmetics, the famous Cleopatra as an example, bathed in goat's milk to have smooth and soft skin. A major aesthetic concern for men is hair, which, despite not being essential for survival, still has an enormous psychological and social impact. Over time, hair straightening products have become a necessity for many consumers who want their curly, frizzy or wavy hair to be straight. And with that, several forms of straightening emerged that evolved over time. In view of this, the objective of the present work is to carry out a literature review on the main chemical straighteners used in the cosmetic area. In this way, a wide search was carried out for articles and scientific journals published in Scielo, Pubmed and Google Scholar, which were in accordance with the proposed subject. The research covered the period from 1990 to 2022. According to the bibliographic survey, many forms of straightening were launched in the cosmetics market as chemical substances in order to obtain the smoothing effect such as alkaline straightening. These substances act deeply in the capillary fiber, altering the disulfide bonds of the keratin, resulting in a restructuring of these bonds. In addition, the use of formaldehyde-based formulations has become a fever, and the first country to start this practice was Brazil, which brought a high risk to the health of consumers. Then came the progressive brush based on acids such as glyoxylic acid, this procedure known abroad as "Brazilian keratin" had an increase in its popularity because of its compatibility with straightening procedures on bleached hair and other chemicals, giving it a smooth appearance, natural and bright. However, only alkaline and oxidizing chemical relaxers are officially allowed for use. Therefore, the use of straightening products must be done responsibly and it is important to emphasize that the irrational use of substances not authorized by health agencies can pose several health risks.
