description Nitrite and nitrate ions are found freely in the environment, by natural sources through nitrogen biogeochemical cycle, and by anthropogenic sources as employment of excessive nitrogenic fertilizers, domestic and industrial effluents launched inappropriately. With the increasement of urban, agricultural and industrial activities, the superficial waters have been gradually contaminated with nitrate and nitrite ions. The monitorization of nitrite ion, as a toxic chemical agent, is important for both environmental and human health. Frequent ingestion of water contaminated with nitrite is associated with a higher risk of cancer development, beside its known methemoglobin activity, affecting mainly babies and leading them to cyanosis, popularly known as blue baby syndrome. The metropolitan region of Natal/RN contain a large number of lagoons, many of them used to serve water to population, either through water collect systems or by direct use of people living nearby, using them in their plantations, daily needs, for ingestion by animals or for their own consumption. The monitorization of nitrite ion, as a toxic chemical agent, is important for both environmental and human health. Considering the risk to human health, the aim of this study was to monitor nitrite ion concentration in water samples of the lagoons Cachoeirinha, Extremoz, Jacumã, Muriú and Pitangui, localized at north metropolitan region of Natal/RN, through 2020 and 2022. The water analysis was performed using a UV/VIS molecular absorption spectrophotometer. At 2020, the methodology didn’t detect nitrite levels in the samples collected from Cachoeirinha, Jacumã and Muriú lagoons. The samples from Extremoz and Pitangui lagoons revealed 0,01 µg/mL and 0,02 µg/mL, respectively. At 2021, the methodology revealed nitrite concentrations between 0,02 µg/mL and 0,04 µg/mL in the samples analyzed. At 2022, the collect of samples occurred in two moments: March and September. The samples collected in March revealed nitrite concentrations between 0,01 µg/mL and 0,02 µg/mL and those collected in September revealed concentrations between 0,01 µg/mL and 0,02 µg/mL. Light nitrite level variations were observed through the three years of monitorization. These variations can be correlated to the period of samples collection. All samples presented values above 1 mg/L, the maximum value allowed (MVA) of nitrite ion in water for human consumption, according to GM/MS n° 888 (from May 4 th, 2021). The study concluded that in relation to nitrite ion, the water samples were adequate for human use.

The study concluded that in relation to nitrite ion, the water samples were adequate for human use.
