Resumo:In the information society, the development of skills related to analysis, interpretation, representation and critical thinking are fundamental for the exercise of citizenship and decisionmaking. Recognition of the importance of developing such skills is reflected in the construction of national curriculum documents for Basic Education. In the 90's, statistical and probabilistic contents were included in the National Curriculum Parameters (PCNs) through the Information Treatment axis. Recently, in 2018, this recognition was reaffirmed and strengthened with the implementation of the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), a thematic unit named “Probability and Statistics”, which must be worked on mandatory in each year of Elementary School. If, on the one hand, Statistics has gained space in Basic Education school curricula, on the other hand, there is a concern about the initial and continuing training of teachers who teach Mathematics to meet the expectations of the BNCC, specifically, regarding the development of statistical literacy. Since the elaboration phase, the BNCC has been the subject of discussion by researchers and professors across the country. The main concern is the implementation of the document and, above all, the practical (social and political) implications of the reform. Therefore, there is a need for documents that guide teachers and school staff in the elaboration of pedagogical proposals aligned with the new teaching model. In this context, based on a literature review and national and international guidelines in the area of Statistical Education, one of the objectives of this research is to carry out a critical and reflective evaluation of the thematic unit of Probability and Statistics for the Final Years of Elementary School, specifying differences and similarities between the thematic axis Treatment of Information of PCNs and international guidelines. In addition, it seeks to describe the weaknesses that can make it difficult to implement the reform in Basic Education, such as inadequate teacher training. Another objective of this research is to present and describe a didactic proposal that uses the active methodology of project-based learning (PBL) to approach statistical concepts in an eighth grade class of Elementary School in a school located in the State of Rio Grande do Norte. The purpose of the proposal is to show how PBL can enable the development of skills and competences listed in the BNCC, promoting meaningful learning
