Resumo: | This work presents a systematic review of the literature on the green synthesis of copper oxide (CuO) metallic nanoparticles (NPMs) and their applications. The search was focused on scientific articles available on the ScienceDirect platform, published between 2018 and 2022 with keywords related to the topic, and in peer-reviewed journals. The focus of the present work was the green synthesis of copper NPMs as a sustainable, eco-friendly, and safe alternative. In total, 21 articles were chosen for investigation and discussion. General aspects of the synthesis process, properties of the NPMs obtained, and their applications were discussed. All works characterized the nanoparticles obtained via green synthesis using X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), and/or Field Emission and/or Transmission (TEM) techniques, as well as UV-Visible Spectroscopy and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). A minority of the articles added a calcination step after the synthesis in order to eliminate the remaining organic compounds in the final product. In addition, a minority of them developed its synthesis in media with different potential hydrogen (pH) and investigated the influence of this factor on the final properties. The applications were divided into health, environment and catalysis, and other areas, which included energy storage, sensors, and fingerprint recognition. In the area of environment and catalysis, the concept of sustainability was complemented by copper NPMs application to the degradation of organic contaminants by catalytic or adsorption processes. The applications were diversified and, for the most part, successful. |
