Resumo:Chlorine dioxide is one of the most interesting oxidants, because it combines a strong oxidizing capacity with a low formation of dangerous by-products such as chlorinated organics during its application. For this reason, it is widely used in the disinfection of drinking water and its use in the disinfection of surfaces or buildings is currently being evaluated. Although it is usually produced by the chemical interaction of chlorite with hypochlorite / chlorine or hydrochloric acid, an interesting alternative for its production is the combination of chlorate and hydrogen peroxide in a strongly acidic medium. Both compounds are known to be efficiently manufactured using electrochemical technology, opening up the possibility of a complete electrochemical process for the production of this important oxidant. This thesis summarizes recent advances in the electrochemical production of raw materials, as well as in the complete electrochemical production of chlorine dioxide, not only paying attention to the scientific literature, but mainly to recent patents, trying to see at what level of technological availability is each of the technologies and what are the elements of the value chain necessary for a complete implementation of the technology.
