between man and space in central areas, having the urban park as a reference. It reflects a
concern, a growing problem in our cities, the gradual loss of public spaces for coexistence,
meetings and leisure. The Evaldo Cruz Park (PEC), the study universe of this research, is
located in the Centro neighborhood of Campina Grande - PB, it was widely used and
appropriated by the population until the mid-1990s, when the area began to decline. It is a well
located public space, located in a core of strong integration of the city, it has good physical and
urban structure, with good potential for use, offering areas for permanence, bordered by urban
facilities that attract a large number of people daily, however, it presents low levels of use and
appropriation by the population. Faced with this situation, in which the park loses its importance
within the social context of the city, the question is: According to the perception of former
users, how did the process of transformation of the relations of uses and appropriations between
the population of Campinas and the PEC take place? The main objective of this work is to tell
the story of Parque Evaldo Cruz, focusing on the transformations in the relations of use and
appropriation that occurred over time, based on oral history. The specific objectives are: (1) To
discuss recent questions about the socio-spatial transformations that involve public space in the
contemporary city, having the urban park as a reference; (2) To present the Evaldo Cruz Park
according to historical aspects and its physical characteristics; (3) To describe the
transformations in the relations of uses and appropriations that occurred in the Evaldo Cruz
Park over time, based on the memory and perception of its users. For this case study, knowledge
of the past was perceived from reports of the present, transmitted orally, through the narratives
of different generations. As sources of evidence for the case study, oral history, document
analysis and on-site observation were used, and as a method of data analysis, Bardin's content
analysis (1977). Based on the analyses, three categories were created: (1) Golden years and
former uses of Evaldo Cruz Park; (2) Decay of Parque Evaldo Cruz and its new uses and users;
and (3) From the golden years to the future of Parque Evaldo Cruz. When discussing each
category, the socio-spatial transformations through which the PEC passed over the years were
reported, from a space widely used by the population to a space with low levels of appropriation.
From this, it was possible to understand why the park is in this situation of abandonment, going
beyond the discourse that “the place is very dangerous”. There is a social, political and
economic process behind the decay of traditional central areas of cities, beyond just physical problems. |

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES Esta pesquisa dá ênfase a um tema cujas reflexões e análises se pautam na relação entre o homem e o espaço em áreas centrais, tendo o parque urbano como referência. Reflete uma preocupação, de um problema cada vez maior em nossas cidades, a perda gradativa dos espaços públicos para convivência, encontros e lazer. O Parque Evaldo Cruz (PEC), universo de estudo desta pesquisa, está situado no bairro Centro de Campina Grande - PB, foi amplamente utilizado e apropriado pela população até meados da década de 1990, quando se tem início a decadência da área. É um espaço público bem localizado, situado em núcleo de forte integração da cidade, possui boa estruturação física e urbana, com bom potencial de uso, oferecendo áreas destinadas a permanência, margeado por equipamentos urbanos que atraem grande número de pessoas diariamente, porém, apresenta baixos níveis de uso e apropriação por parte da população. Diante dessa situação, em que o parque perde a importância dentro do contexto social da cidade, questiona-se: Segundo a percepção de antigos usuários, como se deu o processo de transformação das relações de usos e apropriações entre a população campinense e o PEC? Este trabalho tem como objetivo geral contar a história do Parque Evaldo Cruz, com foco nas transformações das relações de uso e apropriação ocorridas ao longo do tempo, a partir da história oral. Os objetivos específicos são: (1) Discutir as questões recentes sobre as transformações sócio espaciais que envolvem o espaço público na cidade contemporânea, tendo como referência o parque urbano; (2) Apresentar o Parque Evaldo Cruz segundo aspectos históricos e suas características físicas;(3) Descrever as transformações das relações de usos e apropriações ocorridos no parque Evaldo Cruz ao longo do tempo, a partir da memória e percepção dos seus usuários. Para este estudo de caso, o conhecimento do passado foi percebido a partir de relatos do presente, transmitidos oralmente, através das narrativas de diferentes gerações. Como fontes de evidências do estudo de caso foram utilizadas história oral, análise documental e observação in loco, e como método de análise de dados, análise de conteúdo de Bardin (1977). A partir das análises, foram criadas três categorias: (1) Anos de ouro e antigos usos do Parque Evaldo Cruz; (2) Decadência do Parque Evaldo Cruz e seus novos usos e usuários; e (3) Dos anos de ouro ao futuro do Parque Evaldo Cruz. Ao discutir cada categoria, foram relatadas as transformações sócio espaciais pelas quais o PEC passou ao longo dos anos, desde um espaço amplamente utilizado pela população a um espaço com baixos níveis de apropriação. A partir disto, pôde-se entender o porquê de o parque se encontrar nessa situação de abandono, indo além do discurso de que “o local é muito perigoso”.
